Gift-giving is a fine art. When executed with pure precision, it provides us with a tangible way to show our loved ones how much we really care. 

But when it comes to buying the perfect gift for those friends in my life who seem to already have everything, I’m always left desperately scrambling for answers. 

These chic and fabulous girlfriends come in handy for many things, like a killer restaurant recommendation or finding that one cute top at the back of the Zara sale rack. But it’s really hard to buy them gifts they’ll love, and actually use.

So, how should we best approach buying a gift for someone who has everything? 

“Planning ahead is what makes an excellent gift,” Gifts Australia CEO Emily McWaters told Beauty IQ. 

“If you give yourself enough time to really think about the likes and interests of the person you are buying a gift for, the right present or idea will come to you. Personalised gifts that really speak to your recipient will always be cherished,” she said. 

“Remember, it is never about how much money you spend, but instead how much thought you give to selecting their gift.”

Emily says it’s always possible to find a unique gift for someone who has everything.

“When you are looking for the perfect gift for someone who has everything, research is the key,” she advised. 

“A quick deep dive into their social media and a chat with friends or parents about their interests is a great way to start. Then go ‘window shopping’ online. It’s much easier than pounding the pavement!”

Emily has a great practical tip for avoiding any awkwardness associated with work gifts. 

“For work colleagues, we suggest making it a group gift, so everyone in the office is responsible for creating joy in someone’s life,” she said.

“I’d also recommend not going too personal with a gift. Something that they can use around the office or workplace is a great idea, as is a gift voucher for a store they love.”

Emily reminded me that the whole point of gift-giving is to show the people we love them, so take a moment to think about what is really important to your recipient, and what they could perhaps be missing from their life. 

“When it comes to a close family member or friend, you want your gift to show them how much you care by giving them something that will mean a lot to them,” she said. 

In the end, they’ll mostly be thrilled about the time and effort you devoted to them. 

“The old saying, ‘It’s the thought that counts’ definitely rings true when it comes to close relationship gifting,” Emily said.
