philosophy was founded in 1996 by Cristina Carlino in New York. Carlino is a cosmetics industry visionary who dreamt of making dermatological-quality skincare available in retail stores. Carlino set out to develop multitasking, pleasantly fragranced products — products that would help women look and feel their best while nourishing their spirit. With over 30 years of experience in clinical skincare, Cristina worked with labs to bring philosophy to market.

The first product introduced by philosophy was purity made simple facial cleanser. In 1997, philosophy launched its two-step, in-home peel product that was formulated to both detoxify and rejuvenate skin. Over the next few years, philosophy expanded its line to include shower gels, bubble baths, shampoos, a fragrance line, and skincare kits for specific complexion concerns. philosophy launched ultimate miracle worker, a line of advanced anti-ageing creams, in 2015.
